NEW CAR LABEL
LIFTS FOR SERVICE MEN. A new label being attached to the windscreens of motor-cars in Britain says “Lifts for Service Men.” It is being issued by the Royal Automobile Club in co-operation with the Rotary Clubs. The main idea is to give lifts to men. including women in uniform, on country roads. Seeing that label, the walker will not be afraid to signal that he wants a lift; it will be a sort of badge of the motorist's good faith. Such a badge is by no means superfluous; not all lifts in motor-cars have been offered in good faith. The uniform is the corresponding guarantee of the would-be passenger. In older days giving a lift was a pleasant and helpful custom of the road. It was coming back by degrees, encouraged by the “hitchhikers,” who, in English, are harmless people who go for a walk and ask for lifts when they feel like it. The new label and its purpose will do much to restore the credit of this ancient form of doing a good turn.
