CARTERTON

ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS LOYAL HEART OF OAK LODGE. (“Times-Age” Special.) The fortnightly meeting of Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge. Manchester Unity Order of Odd Fellows, was held last evening, Bro C. C. Deller, N.G.. presiding over a large attendance oi members, including visitors from Eketahuna and Masterton and three members of the Wellington District Management Committee. Sick pay and accounts amounting to £lB Is lid were passed for payment. Two members declared off the sick funds of the lodge. A funeral benefit in connection with the death of the wife of a member was passed for payment. Bro E. M. Bish, a member of Heart of Oak Lodge, wrote, forwarding the handbook of the Otago District. The secretary reported that Bro W. Stoodby had found it necessary to reenter the hospital for treatment. The newly-elected officers were installed into their respective offices by P.G. Bro R. Farrow of Eketahuna and a member of the Wellington District Management Committee. He was assisted by P.G.’s Bros R. Baikie and G. S. Bruce, also members of the management committee. The ceremony was an impressive one and the newlyinstalled officers returned thanks for their election. The installing officers were thanked for their work and accorded lodge honours.

Supper was afterwards provided and card playing indulged in. An invitation from Loyal Masterton Lodge to attend a dance next Saturday evening was accepted with thanks, as also was an invitation from Loyal Eketahuna to a card party and social early in July.

OBITUARY

MRS MARY IRELAND. There passed away at the Masterton Public Hospital yesterday a very old and respected resident in the person of Mrs Mary Ireland, widow of Mr J. IreDeceased had not enjoyed the best health for some time and quite recently she was obliged to enter Masterton Hospital, for treatment. The late /Mrs Ireland was the second daughter ’ of the late Mr and Mrs George Kiddie, 1 early pioneer settlers of Carterton., and was born in Carterton in 1862. She had seen Carterton and district grow from bush-clad country with many sawmills in operation, to its present prosperous position. The late Mrs Ireland had lived in Carterton for 68 years and had resided in Featherston for 10 years. Three boys and one daughter are left. They are Messrs James, George. Robert Ireland, and Mrs H. Goodin, of .Park Road, Carterton. One son was killed at the Great War of 1914-18, one died in the epidemic of 1920, and a daughter died 13 years since. There are three great-grand-children and 13 grandchildren. The deceased’s living sisters are Mrs F. Jackson, of Pembroke Street, Carterton; Mrs S. Park, of Auckland, and Mrs Fair, of Australia; Mr R. Kiddie, of Hamua, and W. Kiddie, of Tauranga, are brothers. Three other brothers, Messrs George, David and John Kiddie pre-deceased her. The deepest sympathy of a large circle of friends will be extended to the bereaved family. The funeral is to leave the residence at 1.30 p.m. tomorrow, after a service at 1.15 p.m., for the Clareville Cemetery.

COMBINED BALL

A BRILLIANT SUCCESS. The combined ball of the Carterton branches of the Womens Division of the Farmers - Union. N.Z. Farmers’ Union and Young Farmers’ Club was held in the King's Theatre, Carterton, last'evening and was a brilliant success. Visitors were present from all parts of the district, and the large attendance of patrons spent a very enjoyable time to dance music played by Udy’s Dance Band. The combined committee of the various institutions had spared nothing to make the

ball the pronounced success it was, and as a result of their efforts patri- , otic funds will benefit to the extent of approximately £37. The duties of M.C.* were capably carried out by Messrs M. Knutson and L. Renall and under their guidance there was not a dull moment throughout the whole evening.. Much appreciated extras were played by Misses M. Herrick, M. Stent, E. Daysh and Messrs D. J. Irwin and T. Udy. The interior of the hall was tastefully decorated with bunting kindly lent for the occasion. The joint secretaries, Mrs A. Stretton and Mr H. McKenzie were untiring in their efforts and the success of the function, in conjunction with an energetic committee, was due to their excellent organisation. PLUNKET SOCIETY

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Carterton branch of the Plunket Society was held on Monday, Mrs Wells presiding over a fair attendance, including members from the Greytown sub-branch. An apology for absence was received from Mrs Callender. The report and balance-sheet was adopted. Mrs Wells thanked the committee for its support and work throughout the year. She mentioned how much encouragement would be received from a bigger membership of mothers. That the work was fully appreciated was shown by the fact that while 62 birth notifications had been received there were 55 new cases on the nurse’s books.

The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mrs Wells; vicepresidents, Mesdames W. H. Booth, F. Court, H. Knutson, J. Steel, H. E. Jackson, J. Udy, Misses Moncrief! and Strang; committee, Mesdames N. Armstrong, Callender, Candy, R. N. Campbell. E. W. Dyer, V. L. Robinson and D. L. Taverner; advisory board, Messrs W. Howard Booth, A. C. Tucker, W. J. Card, J. Steel, the Rev W. F. Stent and Drs Campbell and Wells; hon secretary and treasurer, Mrs Trapp; hon auditor, Mr H. Mortenson. Mrs Wells then gave an interesting account of the Clapham Health Centre which she visited while in London and which was doing valuable work in providing pre-natal instruction to parents and recreational facilities for children. Mrs Wells also spoke of a brief visit she paid to Highgate, the Mother Craft training centre. The serving of afternoon lea concluded the meeting.
