A crowded Senate and galleries applauded for 60 -seconds Senator Lee’s appeal to send the Allies everything possible except men. and to pool resources against the common enemy. Senator Connally likened Italy’s entrance to the action of a hungry landgrabber. GREAT TRAGEDY MR CORDELL HULL’S COMMENT. (Received This Day, 12.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, June 10. Mr Cordell Hull (Secretary of State) said: “The Italian entry into the war will prove a great disappointment to people everywhere and a great human tragedy.” It is expected that the Neutrality Act will be invoked quickly: declaring Italy a belligerent and the Mediterranean a combat zone.
The House or Representatives’ military committee voted by 16 to 8 to authorise President Roosevelt to call out the National Guard in the event of an emergency, but the Guard will be used only in United States territory. The committee also approved an increase in the strength of the Regular Army to 400,000.
