BRITISH TROOPS
DRIVEN BACK BY ENEMY NUMBERS EACH POSITION HELD TENACIOUSLY. WITHDRAWAL ONLY UNDER ORDERS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day, 12.15 p.m.) LONDON, June 10. An eyewitness with the British Army in France says: “The British troops fought fierce rearguard actions today against steadily advancing German tanks and infantry. Our men were driven back by greatly superior forces, but held each position tenaciously until the order to withdraw was received. “All their courage and stubborness was unable to stop the German advance, which has been accelerated in this sector in the last forty-eight hours. One famous battalion ordered to retire in a few hours, spent the time in launching a violent attack against the Germans. The fighting was so bitter that both sides informally called a truce to bring in their dead and wounded.”
