£2000 DONATION
HANDSOME GIFT TO RED CROSS FUND GIVER PREFERS TO REMAIN ANONYMOUS. FURTHER OFFERS STILL COMING IN. A cheque for £2OOO from an anonymous donor was handed in to the Masterton Sick and Wounded Fund yesterday. The committee is very grateful to the above donor, who sent in his cheque through his solicitor. He wishes to assist the soldiers but seeks no publicity, preferring to remain anonymous. The cheque will bring Masterton’s total to a figure comparable to the efforts of larger towns. Another cheque for £29 has been received from Messrs J. A. Betts, Ltd., in addition to a previous donation from Mr J. A. Betts of £25. Mr L. Sutton has forwarded a cheque for £25. An anonymous donor, a lady, has handed in two 18-carat gold rings (one set with pearls and one with diamonds and rubies) and a gold and platinum bracelet. These, when sold, should add a considerable sum to the fund. Over and above personal donations the Central School staff has sent in the first instalment of a collecting box, amounting to £1 7s 6d. The cord of matai firewood donated to the fund has been sold by the committee for £2 15s.
Although the appeal for funds for sick, wounded and distressed soldiers by the New Zealand Red Cross Society and the Order of St John has been officially closed for over a week the voluntary office staff feels that it may be needed for the duration of the war owing to the large number of donations and offers still coming in. The total of the fund this morning was £6203 4s 2d.
