Churchill, Manitoba.—White whale hunting in Hudson Bay will be one of the features of the annual 1940 Canadian National Railways tour to the north country from Winnipeg. The whales, weighing about 1,200 pounds, are a species of porpoise and are hunted from 20-foot canoes, powered by an outboard motor capable of driving the canoe at a speed of 16 miles per hour. The whales swim 25 miles per hour, so it takes careful manoeuvring for. the hand-harpoonist in the bow to make a strike. The final kill is made with a high-powered rifle.
