WAIRARAPA CLUB RACE. WIN FOR D. BIRNIE. / On Saturday the Wairarapa Amateur Cycling Club held a 20 mile event from Masterton to the Royal Oak Hotel, Carterton and back, starting and fin- 1 ishing at the Central School. Although there were only four starters, the race proved a fast one. J. Heaven, riding off a handicap of 3.30, was first away. Half a minute later G. Simpson was sent away with D. Birnie half a minute later still. The scratch man, K. Woollett, started with 3A minutes to catch on the limit man. This proved an impossible task considering the grouping of the first three men who are improving on’their form each Saturday. Heaven, Simpson and Birnie bunched about 3 miles from the start and remained so throughout the race. The sprint home saw Birnie heading in Heaven closely followed by Simpson, later came Woollet who had to De content with second fastest time.
Detailed results —D. Birnie (2.30), 1; J. Heaven (3.30), 2; G. Simpson (3.0), 3. Fastest times—D. Birnie, 52mins 31 secs), 1; K. Woollett (scr), 52mins 45 secs, 2; G. Simpson 53mins 4secs, 3.
