EKETAHUNA

COUNTY WORK OPERATIONS IN RIDINGS. (“Times-Age" Special.) The engineer (Mr W. C. Duffill) reported as follows to the monthly meeting of the Eketahuna County concerning the work for May:—East Riding: During this month no work of a special nature has been carried out in the riding other than some patching and water-tabling. Alfredton Riding: The Settlement, Flat Bush, Leaches, Savages and Haunui roads were graded and an appreciable number of minor slips were removed throughout the riding. Some culverts were repaired on Wingate's Road but other than the above only surface work was carried on. West Riding: Three pipe culverts were laid on the Pukahoi Road to replace wooden ones which gave out. Two pipe culverts were also placed on the Mangaraupui Road. Grading and metalling work was done for the Borough Council. The crusher has been set up at Kaiparoro for metalling work at the southern end of the riding. Metal royalty: An appreciable sum of money is paid annually in the Te Hoe area of the Alfredton Riding and the settlers concerned were written to requesting that, in view of the council's desire to keep expenditure to a minimum consistent, with giving reasonably surfaced roads, they forego the 3d per cubic yard royalty on metal taken from the stream for the period of the war. It is regrettable that this request has not been favourably received by all concerned.
