WAIKINO MURDERS
ACCUSED MAN BEFORE COURT HEARING OF EVIDENCE BEGUN. TWENTY-EIGHT WITNESSES CALLED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WAII-11, This Day. The hearing of the murder charge preferred against Douglas Herbert Cartman, a single man aged 22, was begun this morning. Accused is charged with the murder at Waikino on April 2 last, of Elizabeth Agnes Hamilton, a married woman aged 27, whose body was found next morning in the scrub beside the Waikino-Waitewheta Road. Twenty-eight witnesses have been subpoenaed and it is expected that the hearing will last for at least two full days. The first witness, Stanley Eric Anderson, Public Works Department Engineer at Paeroa, gave evidence that he had surveyed the Pae-roa-Waihi Highway from 15 chains on the Paeroa side of the Waikino Hotel and detailed various measurements taken of car marks and positions where the bodies of Mrs Hamilton and Lloyd Moran, the 15-year-old son of the then proprietor of the Waikino Hotel, were found.
