That men who enlisted for active service should be replaced in then civil employment by men not eligible for such service, was a proposal which met with approval at the meeting of the Southland Recruiting Committee. It was recommended that employers should be approached with a request that they should give effect to such a proposal as far as possible, in oidei that as many eligible men as possible could be released. It was stated that some men were postponing theii enlistment because of their complaint that other fit men would take their jobs for the duration of the war.
