HAWKE’S BAY, MEETING
STEEPLES TO SMALL BOY. WIN FOR ENDORSEMENT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) HASTINGS, June 8. The Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club held the first of its one-day winter meetings today. The totalisator investments for the day were £10.593 10s, compared with £11,166 10s last year.. Endorsement was always going like a winner in the Heretaunga Handicap at the Hawke’s Bay meeting on Saturday, in which she was coupled with Screen Star. She fought on solidly until victory was assured and she passed the post a comfortable winner by a length and a half from Hunting Royal, who was not well placed early and had to come from a good way back. A Sporting Spectacle. The Dunedin Steeplechase on Saturday provided one of the best sporting spectacles ever seen on the course. The field gave a fairly good display of fencing, and crossing the double at the back, five furlongs and a half from home, was racing in fairly close order. Mount Vai, Gold Wren, and Arctic Star had been showing the way, and Slayer had joined in about a mile from home. Slayer made a mistake in landing over the second of the double, but had raced to the front at the last fence, where he again stumbled on landing. His pilot, however, retained his seat, and finally won by two lengths from Gold Wren, who beat Song Boy by the same distance. Joy Boa came from the tail of the field to finish fourthfl Gold Wren ran a very creditable race for his third race at the meeting. Led All The Way. Small Boy led all the way to win the Hawke's Bay Steeplechase on Saturday from two other starters. Dozie Boy tried to go with him over the last round but a couple of mistakes ruined any chance he had. Southern Blood, who was sore from a schooling fall, jumped badly and was soon a long way out of it. ( Jockey Premiership. The three leading jockeys attended the Hawke’s Bay meeting on Saturday and B. H. Morris improved his position by two wins. Broughton'and Wiggins failed to pilot a winner.

Aged Horse. In reply to a correspondent, a horse becomes aged in his seventh year. Racing Taxation. Taxation in connection with the Auckland Racing Club's winter meeting amounted to £18,754, made up as follows:—Totalisator duty, £9655; dividend duty, £8447; stakes duty, £118; and amusement tax, £532. An Excellent Record. Of the 40 races contested by All Irish to date, six have been over the Ellerslie country and he has won them all. The races that contributed to this splendid list are the Hunt Club Cup, Pakuranga Huilt Cup, Hunters’ Steeples, Winter Steeples (twice), and Great Northern Steeples. Against this, his only success over hurdles at Ellerslie has been in the Hunt Club Hurdles. Te Rapa and Trentham have also borne witness to the gameness and consistency of All Irish as a steeplechaser. At the Waikato course he has raced five times over country for one win, three thirds and a fourth. He has been over the Trentham country seven times for one win, two seconds and a third. All Irish started twice on his only visit to Riccarton and was unsuccessful. Spanish Lad Fails. Spanish Lad went out to win the King George Handicap at Dunedin on Saturday, but after leading to the distance was headed by Alma and Cherokee. A good finish resulted in Cherokee beating Alma by a head. Hanlon drew up to finish third, and Night Pal next. Monipere was prominent to the home turn, but then faded. Made the Grade. Flying Flag, who won her maiden at Napier Park, made the grade among the hacks,' leading all the way to win the Clifton Handicap on Saturday at Hastings. She was followed by Dainty Dell in all the running, but the lastnamed could make no impression on Flying Flag, who won. all out, by a length and a half, while Gay Laura came fast to cut down Dainty Dell in the last stride. Shani was fourth. Arachne put in a brief claim in the straight, but did not look like getting near the money.
