OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS

CAUSES OF WAR (To the Editor) Sir,— May I again use your hospitable column? Mr Percy Wright, I thank you! I am not an R.C. I hate, abjure and vehemently detest that detestable and stupid contradiction implied in R.C. I am an N.Z.C. (New Zealand Catholic). (2) We shall not quarrel over the respective greatness of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. Nero, the Hitler, liquidated them on the same day in Rome. (3) We will allow that aged, Apostolic tree to flourish a little longer. May Hitlerism perish there —another witness that the "gates of Hell” cannot exterminate it. (4) Rightly do you agree that the root elemental cause of this unspeakable evil is moral rather than economic. (5) Mass murder, organised crime, detestable adulteries, criminal abortions, according to statistics—McMillan Report—6ooo annually in New Zealand, and that more than thrice-cur-sed “Fifth Column” —that detestable onanism of the age, mutual prostitution (Bernard Shaw). Where now is the prophetess, Dr Marie Stopes? Where are the advocates of the Currette and the Birth Control Clinic? “Rend your hearts and not your garments” —What use is prayer in the hall, the church, or temple, unless the heart becomes the “living temple of God. You know your Saint. Paul, Mr Wright, “Those who do such things perish,”—and deserve to perish here and hereafter.

(6) There is a further cause to these causes. Lord Lothian, in Canada, said: “We have killed God; we have worshipped the machine. Let us bring back God to the school.” Again, “The London Times,” says: “It will be of little use to fight, as we are fighting today, for the preservation of Christian principles, if Christianity itself is to have no future, or at immense cost to safeguard religion against attack from without if we allow it to be starved by neglect from within.” —I am, etc., —N. MOORE. Masterton, June 8.
