SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP HASTWELLS v. CARTERTON. FAST INTERESTING GAME. Bright, fast hockey was again witnessed by a good crowd of spectators on the Lansdowne ground on Saturday when Hastwells and Carterton met. Carterton went very close to avenging their defeat of a few weeks ago, but the determination of the Hastweli> forwards produced a drawn game. Both teams opened very cautiously and appeared to be playing safe, neither team providing openings for their opponents to take advantage of. A few minutes after the commencement of play Hastwells went very close to scoring, Worthington's shot missing by a very small margin. Carterton conceded two penalty corners and from one of these Worthington again missed. Hastwells were awarded a penalty bully but Carterton cleared. After about 20 minutes play, Jackson opened the score for Carterton. Offside play robbed Carterton, of two opportunities of scoring and from a free hit from one of these infringements the ball was taken to the Carterton’s circle where a penalty corner was awarded to Hastwells, from which Worthington scored a goal. Hastwells were setting a hot pace at this stage and two minutes before the spell ended Brian Dick put Hastwells ahead with a hot shot. Hastwells 2, Carterton 1. The second spell produced brilliant hockey, both teams settling down in earnest. Worthington spoilt a good chance of scoring by obstructing, and the free hit took Carterton into Hastwell’s circle where Jackson goaled for his side, making the score equal. Carterton again pressed in Hastwell’s circle and after getting the goalie out of position Worsfold slipped and missed a chance of an easy'goal. Good play by the Hastwells forwards, led by Bob Dick, enabled the latter to again put his. side ahead. Play was of' a high standard at this stage of the game. Raukere had a shot at the Carterton goal but the ball went over the top of the net. Carterton took play to the circle where Jackson had a shot but missed, a penalty corner' shortly after enabled S. Fisher to again bring the score equal. Carterton were pressing hard for an advantage, S. Fisher just missing from a penalty corner. Worsfold, with a brilliant solo effort from just inside half-way scored a good goal, putting Carterton in the lead with only a few minutes to go. Hastwells, however, again came to light with good forward play which ended in Brian Dick goaling. Time was called shortly after, the game ending Hastwells 4, Carterton 4. Messrs Maloney and Moor were the umpires.
DALEFIELD v. WESLEY. EVENLY CONTESTED GAME. A very evenly contested game was played between Dalefield and Wesley at Lansdowne on Saturday. Both these teams are playing good hockey and either one may be responsible for the upsetting of the leading teams. During the first half Dalefield were doing most of the attacking and were 3 goals up at the end of the spell. Wesley missed chances in this spell by erratic shooting. The second spell reversed the trend of play, Wesley scoring 3 goals and Dalefield 1 goal. The final score was: Dalefield 4, Wesley 3. Goals were, scored for Dalefield by Gallon (2), Knutson (1) and-Ordish (1), and for Wesley by Stevenson, Cole and E. Steer.
The umpires were Messrs Hayne and Clements.
