WINTER SPORTS CLUB. HIGH STANDARD OF PLAY. The Masterton Winter Sports Club this week held another successful gathering when Messrs J. Haywood and I. Coleman were engaged in instructing beginners on the various points that have to be mastered before they become first class players. The standard of the play is very high. P. Greenlees, I. Coleman, J. Haywood, J. Nicholls. Mrs Nicholls, Mr M. Winslade and Mrs Winsladc are among the club’s best exponents of the game. Alf. Howes continues to show marked improvement. N. Leadley has a powerful forehand drive which is very disconcerting for his opponents. Miss Nora Brown has made a wonderful recovery after her illness last season and critics have it that she will be hard to beat at the Wairarapa championships this season.
Mr and Mrs Catherali are going remarkably well. Miss Scanlon is showing some good form lately. With a little more experience she will be a great asset to the club in the competitions. Mrs Leadley is improving too, but she would find it easier if she used a rubber surfaced bat. The other players spin the ball a little too much for her to do justice with a wooden bat. However, she is a very steady player and is very good in competition play. Miss Quinn shows much of her former, dash and is one of the best inter-club players. P. Greenlees is one of the club’s best players. This 1939 Wairarapa champion is as good as ever and will surely make players of the calibre of H. Myers, I. Coleman, N. Myers, J. Nir cholls and M. Winslade, put their best foot forward to beat him. J. Nicholls, another ex-champion, has been working out at Alfredton, and has not been to the club as regularly as before, but nevertheless there are very few players in the Wairarapa who are able to defeat him. M. IVinslade is showing his old forehand drive to advantage this season. Members are looking forward to a match with the Parkvale Club on June 15 at the club’s rooms in Dixon Street. On the following Tuesday the Winter Sports Club will play Borthwick’s. A tournament will be held tonight, and a “guest evening” on Tuesday.
