STAFF REDUCTIONS
AT RAILWAY WORKSHOPS. DISMISSALS TOTAL EIGHTY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Dj . “It appears inevitable that there will be further reductions of staffs at railway workshops,” said Mr E. Casey, General Manager of Railways, when he confirmed yesterday afternoon reports that shortening of staffs was proposed. So far, the dismissals had totalled 30, said Mr Casey. The workshops affected were Hillside, Addington and Hutt, but no retrenchments had taken place at Otahuhu. The dismissals had been made necessary because of the call to conserve the financial resources of the country for sterling purposes and the impossibility of obtaining material for new construction work.
“We are going into the matter of further reductions at present,” .said the general manager. “Traffic has kept up to such an extent that there has been no necessity to reduce the number of employees in the traffic departments. The running of trains requires men trained to carry out the safety regulations and as more than 1100 men in the railway service, including quite a number from the workshops, have enlisted, reductions of staffs in those branches have not been needed.”
