RED CROSS

ACTIVITIES OF MASTERTON SUB=CENTRE GROUPS FUNCTIONING WELL. ARRANGEMENTS FOR PADDY'S MARKET. At the monthly meeting of the Masterton Sub-Centre of the Red Cross Society, held in the Lecture Room, Municipal Buildings, Mrs G. G. Tolhurst presided over a large attendance. Reports from the convenors of the three working groups—Hospital Supplies, Knitting and Refugee were read to the meeting. All these groups are achieving a tremendous amount of work and the only complaint is that it is often difficult to obtain sufficient supplies of material to keep all workers busy. This particularly applies to the knitting group, as suitable wools are in short' supply. The hospital group is building up reserves for any emergency that may arise as well as supplying its quota to the troopships and the base hospital in Egypt. The refugee group has already sent away four cases containing 1200 garments and will be most grateful for further donations of clothing as this need is most urgent. All donors sending in garments are requested to see that they the clean. The society is most grateful for the following gifts to be raffled: A , doll donated by Mrs R. A. Bunny and dressed by Mrs Candy; a cake donated by Miss Butcher; a handbag donated by Mrs G. Dallas, and a jade necklace presented by an anonymous donor. It is to be hoped that the proceeds of these raffles will considerably swell the local funds. All these raffles will be drawn on August 2.

On August 2 the Masterton Red Cross, in conjunction with the Country Women’s District Red Cross, the Returned Soldiers’ Association, Women’s Institutes and the Young Farmers’ clubs is holding a Paddy’s Market in the Municipal Hall. This is to be the big effort of the local Red Cross for the year and it is hoped by this effort to raise sufficient funds to carry on the society’s activities until the end of the year. The society has been fortunate in securing the services of Mr Nops and Mr Bennett as joint secretaries for the Paddy’s Market, full particulars of which will be published later. GIFT PARCELS. Miss Burnett read a report from the Mayoress's Patriotic The question of gift parcels was dealt with and, the various groups were asked to give their assistance in providing the necessary quotas. Arrangements are also being made to make hussifs and pay-book covers. During the month the secretary, Miss Daly resigned. Her resignation was received with regi-et as she had been a great help to the society and Miss K. Cruickshank was elected secretary in her place. The society was very sorry to Jose the services as a convenor on the knitting group of Mrs Cameron Cook, whose husband had been moved to Burnham Camp, also Mrs G. Hayne as a convenor on the refugee group The convenors’ on the various groups are now as follow: —Hospital group, Mesdames A. F. Stewart. H. H. Daniell. J. McKenzie. G. Dallas and P. The following new members were added to the committee: Mrs H. G Dagg and Mrs S. J. Munn representing the Women’s Institutes and Mrs Grigg and Mrs Perfect representing the Women’s Auxiliary of the Labour Party. A special vote of thanks was passed to all those girls who assisted with the street collections in connection with the recent joint appeal. Over £2OO was raised as the result of their efforts. , » Fifty-two girls had signed on for the mechanics course which is held- every Wednesday evening at the Ford Garage and twelve girls have commenced wool classing at the Wairarapa College. It is hoped that it will be possible-for all the schools to co-opcrate and have a junior Red Cross stall at the Paddy’s Market. Mesdames Alexander and Tolhurst and Mr E.
