CONTROL OF ALIENS

STATEMENT BY PREMIER. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Dealing with the control of aliens in New Zealand, in a statement in the House of Representatives yesterday, the Prime Minister (Mr Fraser) said they had all been required to register within 14 days of the outbreak of war, and the term “alien” included British subjects who had at any time been nationals of an enemy State. No alien might land in New Zealand without first applying for registration and giving full personal details, and those admitted were issued with certificates of registration giving their personal description. These certificates they were required to produce when asked by any constable, while at police headquarters in Wellington there was a duplicate of every certificate issued. “Every alien is required to notify any change of address,” the Prime Minister said, “and no such person who is a national of an enemy State may be absent from his home for more than 24 hours without a permit from the police, while he may also be required to report to the police during his absence. No person who is a British subject only by naturalisation may be employed on wharves or shipping without a licence issued by the police. “For years,” Mr Fraser concluded, “the police have investigated any suspicious actions on the part of any alien.”
