IN LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. DEFENCE OF GOVERNMENT WAR POLICY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, June 7. Faith in the ultimate victory of the Allies and in New Zealand’s ability to play an important part was expressed by the mover and seconder of the Ad-dress-in-Reply in the Legislative Council today. Both deprecated a tendency to criticise the Government ana adopt a defeatist attitude. The Hon T. Brindle, who moved the motion, said a certain amount of hysteria was understandable, but it was regrettable that it was being used to further an attack against the Government. He was a Socialist, but considered that the social amenities won by the people of New Zealand should be defended to the last ditch, even if liberties were sacrificed in the fight. The Hon F. E. Lark, who seconded the motion, said that if any scapegoat were needed, it should be Germany and not the Government. New Zealanders would never let the Empire down, and when the full facts of our war organisation were known, no one would be able to criticise the Government.
