General Smuts, in a speech, said the question of internal security was well in hand. “I have watched the fifth column for two years,” he said. “I tolerate differences of opinion, but not disloyalty to our effort. There are a number of traitors wishing to undermine the cause for which we all stand. I will deal with them efficiently.”
