CARTERTON

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MATARAWA-DALEFIELD MEETING (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a large attendance at the Matarawa-Dalefield Institute meeting held in the Matarawa School, Mrs. Rogers presiding. The meeting was opened with the Aspirations, Ode to Friendship and the prayer for peace. The president read a letter written by Miss Jerome Spencer which recently appeared in the “Times-Age." This letter voiced the sentiments of -the members of the Matarawa-Dalefield Institute and was listened to with keen interest. Mrs Grottbe proposed and Mrs Ross Gallon seconded that the local institutes organise a Baby Carnival to obtain money for -the sick and wounded fund. The secretary was instructed to write to the Carterton, Parkvale, and Gladstone institutes and enquire if they were willing to co-operate. Mrs Callister read a letter asking that unaddressed parcels for the forces be .now prepared and forwarded to headquarters. It was unanimously agreed that a voluntary levy of 6d per member each month be paid to ensure a steady flow of parcels. It was decided that a parcel should also be sent to each soldier who left from the Mata-rawa-Dalefield district.

As there is at present a shortage of wool, members were asked to make covers for hot water bottles for military hospitals. A large number of balaclavas, scarves and mittens were on view and are to be sent to the headquarters. Many members have been busy knitting for the military forces.

Mrs Williams and Mrs J. McKenzie gave a very interesting demonstration of wreath making and were accorded a hearty vote of thanks, as were Mrs Stevens and Mrs Knutson who judged the competitions.
