LICENSING COMMITTEE
MEETING AT CARTERTON. ROPE FIRE ESCAPES CONDEMNED. (“Times-Age" Special.) “The time has come when the committee ceases to be satisfied with rope fire escapes.” stated Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M, chairman of the Wairarapa Licensing Committee, at the annual meeting held at Carterton at noon today. There were also present Messrs John Purvis, F. W. Smith, H. T. Rees and W. C. M. Sorenson. Senior-Ser-geant G. A. Doggett. Mastertoil, represented the Police Department, and Mr H. Truman the Health Department. "As rope fire escapes have been passed without comment in the past, licensees will be allowed twelve months to comply with the requirements,” stated Mr Lawry. He observed that it was difficult for children or elderly people to use many of the escapes provided in the past. Mr Lawry stated that it would be unreasonable to hold up licences in the circumstances, which would be granted unless there were any factors of danger. "Licences should realise that the requirements are in the interests of the hotels as well as the travelling public,” added Mr Lawry. The following business was dealt with:
