N.Z. MUSIC CONTESTS
ENTRIES CLOSE ON JULY 1. The New Zealand Centennial organition, set up by authority o£ and with the assistance of the Government, is now conducting musical festivals in all four centres of New Zealand, and as part of the National musical celebrations, contests for choirs and string quartets are being organised. Prizes of £125, £5O and £25 are offered in the choir competition, open to all choirs including Church choirs, but not exceeding 40 voices. In the string quartet section prizes of £5O and £25 are offered. Eliminating competitions will be held between July 26 and 31. and entries will close on July 1. Except for provincial semi-finalist choirs, there will be no travelling necessary, as competitors will be judged as far as is practicable in their own towns. The test pieces for choirs are (1) “Music When Soft Voices Die” (Anderson Tyrer) and (2) “Diaphenia” (C. V. Stanford). The test pieces for the String Quartet Competition are (1) First Movement in Quartet in D Major, usually known as “The Lark” (Haydn); and (2) First Movement of Quartet in A Minor. Opus 51 (Brahms). Any standard edition of either of these String Quartet Movements will be accepted. ' All intending competitors should communicate immediately with E. M. Bardsley.
