WAIRARAPA CIAAIES
ATTENDANCES WELL MAINTAINED. NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By “Bully.") The Wairarapa Women's Association were again favoured with fine weather for the continuation of their fixtures last Saturday. As a result attendances were well maintained, and some fast and keenly contested games resulted. The senior game between College and Excelsior was not played, due to a misunderstanding on the part of the College team as to time set down for starting the match., Excelsior were ready at the advertised starting time, 1.30, but the College players had been wrongly informed that they were to play at 3 o’clock, and consequently did not turn up till that hour. As no grounds were then available, the match had to be abandoned much to the disappointment of both players and spectators, by whom the meeting of these teams had been looked forward to with interest for some time.
A Keen Struggle.
A very keen game was witnessed when Kia Ora and Greytown met on No. 3 ground at Lansdowne. Judging by recent form, Greytown should have been easy winners, but Kia Ora gave a much improved performance. The first spell in which there was no score, was very evenly contested and, playing spiritedly. Kia Ora gave as good as they got. 'With the second spell half gone, Kia Ora looked likely to at least draw the game, but, as has happened on previous occasions, they failed to stay the distance, and Greytown scored comfortably in the closing stages.
More Serious Training Needed
It is a pity Kia Ora do not take their training a little more seriously, as they are capable of doing much better than their record shows. Their defence is quite as good as most teams in the competition, and they are well served both in defence and attack by their half-back line.
Kia Ora’s forwards, however, . are not fit enough to last a hard game through, and nothing will remedy this but consistent practice. In this game the only two forwards to show any evidence of training were Misses M. Pownall and J. Rutherford, who were still going well at the conclusion of the game. Another good performance •was given by Miss M. Whyborn at centre-half. Not Impressive. Greytown did not particularly impress in this game, possibly due to the fact that they were playing one or two of their reserves. They will always, however, be a hard team to beat while th’cv attach the importance to physical' fitness that they do . The team is about an equal mixture of veterans and flrst-year players, and both sections show evidence of careful coaching in the finer points of the game. Speculating is rarely seen among the backs, and their forwards work well together and are capable of staying the distance. A Poor Showing. College Old Girls is another team which neglects its training, and on Saturday put up a very poor showing against Carterton. Starting the season with high hopes. Old Girls have been a disappointment. With a little serious application to training a number of the Old Girls’ players would probably show some of the good form they are known to be capable of. Their present methods will get them nowhere. Good Solid Play. Carterton played a good solid game, and as usual proved hard to score against. Miss V. Ward played a very useful game at centre-half, and Mrs T. Compton showed up well in the forward division. Improved Form Expected. College B did well to keep Te Ore Ore to a 4—2 limit. Now that the holidays are over, and the players are able_to take full advantage of their splendid facilities for practice, improved performances may be expected from the young College team. Transport Fund. Collectors for the Transport Fund are reminded that their lists should be handed in to the secretary of the Association, Miss B. Vincent, not later than this (Wednesday) evening.
