EKETAHUNA

TEACHERS’ INSTITUTE PAHIATUA-BUSH BRANCH. (“Times-Age” Special.) A meeting of the Pahiatua-Bush branch of the N.Z.E.I. was held on Saturday at Eketahuna, the occasion being the visit of Mr P. A. Smithells, Director of Physical Education. Teachers were present from the Pahiatua and Eketahuna District High Schools. Hukanui, Nireaha. Scarborough, Kakariki, Mangatainoka and Hamua schools.

Mr Smithells gave a most interesting account of the new approach to the system of physical education, interspersing his remarks with his own demonstrations of the various activities. He then showed films of children’s activities in English schools, groups of ten-year-old boys, a ■ rural school, and classes of senior infants. The outstanding points emphasised by the speaker were the democratic element, the element of freedom, the allowance for individual differences in physical training, and development. All the activities were purposeful, many of the games building up basic skill to be of much use, later on, in national games. At the conclusion of the display of the films, Mr Slater, president of the branch, expressed the thanks and appreciation of the teachers for the assistance they had received. They felt more enthusiastic and in a new frame of mind completely regarding the physical work. The Superintendent submitted a report in connection with the recent patriotic meeting, saying that the Brigade had been asked to nominate a baby for the Baby Carnival. After a short discussion it was agreed that the brigade nominate a candidate in the carnival, and that Mr and Mrs P. S. Page’s consent be obtained to allow their baby to be nominated as the official brigade candidate.

It was decided that the brigade’s colour in the carnival be red. Superintendent Rogers and Secretary S. Daniel were appointed delegates to attend the central committee meetings.

The following committee was set up to further the cause, of the brigade candidate: Superintendent Rogers, De-puty-Superintendent H. Daniel, Foreman J. Ryan, Treasurer G. Jesson, Secretary S.
