TURF NEWS AND NOTES

CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE

Kikiroki Injured. Kikiroki, the favourite for the Napier Steeplechase, was going well when he ran off at the second fence of the stand double. In doing so he ricked himself and was pulled up. He was lame on returning to the birdcage and it is reported that he will not be seen out again this winter.

Valmint’s Success.

Valmint’s success in the Cornwall Handicap, at Ellerslie, was well merited for in his last three starts in that race he has finished second. In 1937 he was beaten by a head by Boomerang; in 1938 he went under by a head to Cheval de Voice, while last year he was a neck behind Royal Appellant who finished second to him on Saturday. It is interesting to record that Valmint’s dam Lomint won the race in 1926 while his grand-dam Loloma succeeded in 1916. A Rough Passage. Hunting Royal, favourite for the Flying Handicap at Napier, did not receive the best of passages during tire running, but his finishing effort was worthy of note and he rnay be seen to better advantage when the distance is a little greater than six furlongs. Skerryvoro’s Bad Luck. Skerryvore, a full-brother to Lady Stella, was going like a winner in the Napier Steeplechase when he outjumped Tigriterre at the second la.st fence, but he broke down on landing and finished lame. It may be some time before he appears on the track again. Erination Comes to Grief. .. When Erination fell in the Great Northern Hurdles he knocked himself about a good deal, breaking his nose and receiving several cuts on the legs. He came in bleeding from both nostrils and had to receive veterinary attention. Erination did not actually fall at the hurdle, but came down over General Ruse and Aussie Ra, who fell in front of him. It will probably be some time before he is able-to race again.

A Padishah’s Trip Off. -Z Mr J. A. Hennah has decided against taking Padishah to Melbourne, where he is engaged in the Victorian Grand National Hurdles and Steeplechase.

A Soldier’s Luck. • Only 13 £1 tickets were taken out on Gold Bank on the win machine in the All Aged Stakes at Addington on Saturday, and 29£ on the place machine. He paid a very substantial dividend. Among the successful investors was a young Southland soldier at present in camp at Burnham and ho supported the gelding' on both machines. Gold Bank is regarded aj one of the best pacers ever raised !ln Southland, but several recent performances did not point to his decisive win on Saturday. He is by Worthy Bond from Lovematch, a sister to a great performer in Matchlight by Four Chimes — Bay Belle by King Harold. Like the dam and granddam Gold Bank was bred by his owners, Messrs Cross Brothers, Otarna. Room For Improvement. Norseman lost his rider In the Otago Hurdles at the third last hurdle after losing ground at some of the previous jumps. His hurdling will have to improve considerably to enable him to win. One Makes Many. It is invariably a fact that one fractious horse at the barrier can make many by causing a delay which tends to upset others in the field.

Turaki Worth Keeping an Eye On (BY "THE GRAFTER.”) Stamina won the Otago Hurdles for Turaki, who was having only his second race over hurdles. He was giving away some ground early, but had taken the lead with a furlong to go, and won with something in reserve. On Monday Turaki won the Achilles Plate by three lengths from Mosgiel. Turaki is a five-year-old ,’gelding by Balboa from Divinal, a half-sister by Saxby to Divinette, dam of Dividend, and' is owned by Mr A. C. Mills. Earlier in the season he had won a couple of hunters’ flat handicaps'and should have a successful career as a jumper as he also jumps country well.

Turaki’s Successes. Turaki has paid two visits to Wingatui this season, and won on each occasion. He won the Hunters’ Flat at the Otago Hunt Club’s meeting, and won again on Saturday. His third win this season was in the Hunters' Flat at the Birchwood Hunt meeting. His win in the Otago Hurdles was his second start over jumps. Unlucky Episode?

Surcoat's win in the Tahuna Steeplechase recalls a very unlucky episode in the career of F. D. Jones. Some years ago he invited a Dunedin racing writer to visit his stables to inspect the team he was taking over to Sydney. Windshield. the dam of Surcoat, was to be included, but she developed strangles and had to be left behind, and to fill! the vacant space on the ship Royal Dis- > patch was taken. Royal Dispatch war. not'worth the proverbial row of pins ns a racehorse, and he led to what appeared to be an injustice when Jones and McCarten were disqualified in connection with his running. Windshield, the dam of Surcoat was got by Tractor from Kilbreeze, by Kilbroney from Briselette, the dam of Bonnie Winkie. Streamline. The Great Northern Hurdle winner. Rider Bumped Off. . The Tractor gelding Whirr was travelling like a winner in the Otago Steeplechase. He led over the first circuit, but then bumped his rider off at the sod wall and ditch through slipping at the take-off. Wingatui Water Jump. The Wingatui water jump does not require a great deal of jumping provided a horse has plenty of pace on. Albury broke his back at it in the first steeplechase run at Wingatui, and now McHeath makes the second to meet with the same fate. Susie On The Upgraded

Prior to finishing third in the Trial Stakes, the Nigger Minstrel filly Susie had started five times without gaining a place, and is apparently on the improve. as she had to make up ground to gain a place. Gnohill.

The Dunedin maiden winner Gnohill is a three-year-old by Garnish—lnsolvency, by Some Boy II —Kilmcedy, by Kilbroney—Ena, by Royal Artillery— Stress., by Orvieto.
