REGENT THEATRE
“THE WOMEN.” Tonight’s programme will be headed by “The Women.” With star honours divided three ways, among Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford and Rosalind Russell, “The Women” is one of the strongest love stories to come out of Hollywood in months, and yet never showing before the camera the masculine objects of the various women’s affections, “The Women” may well be nominated as one of the most unusual productions of any year. It is decidedly top entertainment from every angle, with sharp, snappy dialogue. thrilling situations and sets of eye-filling beauty. Not since “Riptide" has Norma Shearer appeared in a similar role and her return to a drawingroom comedy is heralded by her many fans. Joan Crawford, portraying a “heavy” for the first time in her screen career, scores a decided triumph, as does Rosalind Russell, who is proving one of Hollywood's most versatile actresses. Phyllis I’ovah, imported from New York to create her stage role in the picture, is a happy addition to the roster of Hollywood players, and Mary Boland and Paulette Goddard .garner more than a generous share of the plaudits. Incidentally, those who witnessed the stage play will find that the drama lost nothing in being transferred to the screen. The broader scope offered by the celluloid provides many more spectacular moments than would be possible on the stage, outstanding among these being the beauty shop sequence and the fashion show. Supporting players who add sterling performances include Joan Fontaine, Virginia Weidler, Lucile Watson, Florence Nash, Muriel Hutchinson, Esther Bale, Ann Morriss, Ruth Hussey, Dennie Moore, Mary Cecil, Mary Beth Hughes, Virginia Grey, Marjorie Main. Cora Witherspoon and Hedda Hopper. Outstanding in the supporting subjects is the latest Robert Benchley, "That Inferior Feeling,” a real laughter provoking gem. Plans are al the theatre and Nimmo’s.
