FEATHERSTON
PATRIOTIC EFFORT AN ENJOYABLE BALL. ("Times-Age” Special.) The final effort of the Featherston Red Cross Society's sub-branch and Hockey Club in aid of the Sick, Wounded and Distress Fund, took the form of a ball held in the Anzac Hall last night. It was a most enjoyable gathering and much credit is due to the committee who worked so hard to make it the success it was. There was a good attendance. The music was supplied by Udy's Orchestra, and Mr C. Buck acted as M.C. Extras were played by Mrs Moran, Misses G. Fraser and M. Matthews and Mr V. Boyd. The Monte Carlo dances were won by Mr I. Feast and Miss P. Mclntosh and Mr N. Luttrell .and Miss L. Ritchie. . During the evening a flag appeal brought in £5 Is. The winners of the various raffles were as follow: —Ham, Mrs McLaren, duchess set, R. A. Gunderson; bed jacket, Mrs F. Noble; cake, T. M. McKenna; chocolates, Miss J. Houston, painting, Mr A. Robbins. The amounts collected were: —South Featherston, Tauherenikau, Kaiwaiwai, £513 7s lid; Featherston, £243 5s Id; Western Lake, £lB7 Is 6d, Cross Creek, £6O; Pahautea and Kahutara, £205.
Party at Cross Creek. A children's plain and ' fancy dress party was held at Cross Creek on Saturday night, when a very happy time was spent. During the evening several items were given by the pupils of Miss Stevens, of Petone, and were much appreciated.
A Tauherenikau Effort,
A most successful dance organised by an energetic committee of Tauherenikau ladies was held in Mr C. J. Nix s woolshed on Saturday evening for the Sick, Wounded and Distress Appeal Fund. The woolshed, which was attractively decorated with streamers and fernery, was packed, and a large number of officers and N.C.O s. from the school of instruction now in training at the racecourse, were present, and added to the gaiety of the scene. The sum of £5l 5s 7d was raised for the fund, 90 per cent of which was raised in the hall by raffles, games and an auction sale.of goods. Mr Highland made a very capable M.C., and a tasty supper wag served. The spot waltz was won by Miss M. Tocker and partner. The raffles included a ham (won by Mrs R. Syme), a turkey (won by Mrs F. Anderson), an iced cake (won by Mrs S. Benton), and a 51b. box of chocolates (won by Mrs W. Nix Junr.). Te Tau’s Orchestra supplied excellent music free of cost. Those present voted the gathering an outstanding success and one of the most enjoyable ever held in the district. Personal Items. Mrs Wall, who is an inmate! of Kelvin Hospital, is reported to be making good progress towards recovery. Mr I. Tilson, Te Kopi, who recently underwent an operation in Kelvin Hospital, is progressing satisfactorily. Table Tennis Team. The following players will represent the Featherston Table Tennis Club against the Greytown Anglican Club at Greytown tonight, commencing at 7.30 p.m.: — Men: J. Saba, B. Dick, A. McNamara. A. McLeod, H. Lovegrove and D. Sim. Ladies: Misses J. Marshall, G. Saba, C. Saba, Q. McLeod, F. Saba and Mrs Lovegrove. Cars will leave the Post office at 7 p.m.
