MANY MORE NEEDED IN UNITED STATES
IN VIEW OF POSSIBLE DEVELOPMENTS. OBSERVATIONS BY CHIEF OF STAFF. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. WASHINGTON, June 2. The Army Chief of Staff, General George C. Marshall, in a statement said that President Roosevelt’s request for discretionary authority to call the National Guard for active duty was a precautionary move aganist the recognised possibility of dangerous developments in this hemsiphere. He did not specify what developments could be expected. General Marshall said that the United States has only five infantry divi-. sions, of 8500 men each, available on' the continent and the sixth was being organised. “Thus, in the event cf trouble in this hemisphere,” said General Marshall, “we require more trained and seasoned troops immediately. At present members of the guard cannot legally be sent out of the country.”
