SOUND OF BATTLE
HEARD ACROSS CHANNEL MORE FRENCH TROOPS ARRIVE. LONDON. June 3. While the sound of the battle across the English Channel is being heard with increasing intensity, more French troops have arrived in England tired and hungry. One of the first things most of them wanted to know was what day it was. Many were unaware that King Leopold had capitulated. . The volunteer canteen workers at the reception ports, who have remained at their posts for days and nights on end are now almost as weary as the arrivals, but food and drink awaits every poilu. One man distributed thousands of postcards to enable the Frenchmen to send messages to thenhomes announcing their safe arrival. Poilus dropped on the quays as they landed, and using railway lines and one another’s backs as supports, eagerly scribbled out messages, which the British Post Office is conveying free of charge.
