NEARLY 300 GERMAN PLANES ENGAGED Two Hundred Casualties Reported THREE ENEMY MACHINES SHOT DOWN Forty-five people were killed when German planes bombed Paris for the first time since the war began, a Daventry message states. Altogether there were two hundred casualties. More than a thousand bombs of all calibres were dropped. Three German planes were shot down during the raid. It is estimated that between 240 and 300 German planes took part. The alarm was sounded at lunch time and German planes were seen flying over the city at a great height. A number of houses on the outskirts of the city were set on fire. One bomb fell within six feet of the American Ambassador.
