BASKETBALL
WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION. NOTES AND COMMENTS. (Contributed.) In the Wairarapa Basketball Association’s competition on Saturday Collegians showed the greater enterprise at the start of play in their game with lona B and wasted no time in settling down. As a result the team was able to early establish a lead. lona B lost several chances because of careless
throwing. Joy Gooder and J. Bennington gave a good display for lona B. The Collegians centres seemed to have a better understanding of each other's play and gave their attackers a plentiful supply of the ball. Had J. Gemmell and M. Julius used their third player, M. Baskiville more, better combination would have been in evidence. M. McLaren did not play up to her usual standard in the centre.
Stars A and College A provided a bright and interesting game. Each team set the pace and gave a good exhibition of basketball. Interceptions by Peggy Oliver for College in the defence were a feature of the College centres. E. McLaren. C. Ross and J. Russell gave an excellent display of centre work, providing the attacks of College plenty of the ball, but inconsistent shooting nullified this advantage. Doreen Dagg, a College attack, was the only one in this third who showed up to advantage. The Star team had an advantage in height in the defence and are also much more experienced than the College team, but nevertheless the College played pluckily. M. Gadsby and A. Burgess certainly saved the situation for their team over and over again. M. Rutherford (Star centre) is a solid player, and is always on the spot at the right moment. She certainly holds her team together in the centre. E. Hamill, a newcomer to the Wairarapa, played a good game in the goal l third. J. Palmer was consistent at the goal for Stars. lona A added another win to their record by overwhelming Carterton. There were some long passes exchanged between the Carterton girls. The long passing between the Carterton attacks and centres although sometimes working out to the team’s advantage, more often than not allowed the lona players to intercept and regain possession of the ball. The Carterton defences worked determinedly in an effort to keep the opposing side’s score down, but lona attacks were too experienced. P. Jamieson, for the lona defence, played exceedingly well, and C. Talbot, R. Percy and P. Jones also were conspicuous. B. Hack, Carterton goal, was seen to advantage in the team, working well all the time. Some very interesting matches were witnessed in the B grade. The GreyHospital and Belvedere teams had a keen struggle. Each team gave an enterprising display and as a result ; of their work the attacks were not starved of the ball. The shooting was ■ not quite so accurate as it might have ; been. Greytown Hospital put a lot of vigour into their play but tiie Belvedere players defended stoutly. A. Mil- ( chell, centre for Greytown Hospital, j shows great promise and has by this season's play justified her inclusion for , a trial in the representative team. V. Hughes also plays well. For the Bel- < vedere team D. Sewell and D. Garrett ; played well. Belvedere is a very keen and enthusiastic team. ]
Collegians were fortunate to win against Stars B as the latter gave a better display of combination work and were unlucky not to secure the honours. Collegians centre were inclined to be slow and arc capable of a better display. These centres have had considerable training in handling and passing the ball quickly, and iiad they carried this out the score could have been more. P. Stevenson was up to her best form and is certainly an asset to her team. J. Snelgrove played very well in the defence together with D. Scott. The Collegian defence players should as the season'advances give a good account of themselves. Thelma Jones and A. Stains for Star ,B pk.y
good basketball. T. Jones should endeavour to improve her field play.
As the score would indicate, the College-Masterton Hospital match was one well worth seeing. S. Duley excelled herself in the goal and No. 2
position suits her type of play. For Hospital team C. Moylan, a Southland representative, is undoubtedly a tower of strength to her team and captain’s them'well. H is unfortunate that Hospital cannot field the same team every week', but it is pleasing to see that these girls give of their best when they can play.
