COURSING
SATURDAY’S BIG MEETING
DERBY AND OAKS STAKES. ’
FORTY-ONE COURSES DECIDED. On Saturday afternoon in beautiful weather and before a large attendance of spectators, the Wairarapa Coursing Club conducted the New Zealand classics, the Derby and the Oaks, as well as maiden and open events. The very large programme was decided without a hitch. There was not an idle moment throughout the afternoon and the fact that 41 courses were put through in 2J hours is claimed by followers of coursing to be an outstanding achievement, never equalled in either New Zealand or Australia. The competing greyhounds were all of high class type and well trained. The coursing was excellent, the hares running strongly. Only a small percentage failed to reach the escapes. The intensive schooling was indicated in the manner in which hares cleverly eluded the dogs by their speed and smart turning. The winners of the various stakes were well distributed over the North Island. The N.Z. Derby winner proved to be a good dog in Mr P. Blair’s (Waipukurau) Master Pareil, who defeated Mr H. Fannin’s (Hastings) Young Boston in the final, 4/1. The N.Z. Oaks was won by the loc-ally-owned Bit -o-Blue, belonging to Messrs Archer Bros. This bitch narrowly defeated Mrs W. Williams Our Biddy, also of Masterton, 1/0. The Maiden event resulted in a popular win for Glengarry, trained in Masterton by Mr J. Ryan. This dog ran brilliantly through his courses to defeat a very good dog in Mr W. Spring’s Ballaramaine, 3/2. The Open event was won by a consistent performer in Mesdames Riding and Jackson’s Mungi Taipo (Wanganui) who defeated Mr W. Spring’s Julius Caesar 3/0 in the final. Details are as follow: —
