The residents of Kaiparoro arc 1 the Sum unding districts were present in large numbers last Friday night at a farewell social tendered to Mr and Mrs Ken. Hansen on the eve of their, departure for Cambridge where Mr Hansen has taken over a farm. Mr. Hansen, who is a son of Mrs M. Hansen, Mount Bruce, and who has lived practically the whole ’of his life at Kaiparoro, will be greatly missed in social and sporting circles in the district. Mrs Hansen, although a recent resident, has made many friends by her willingness to take part in the social activities of the district. Music for the dancing was supplied by Barnes’s Orchestra and extras were played by Mrs G. Hansen. Messrs J. Searancke and Phil Hansen were capable M’s.C. Two much appreciated songs were contributed by Mr Don Falkner to guitar accompaniment.
In making a presentation of a canteen of cutlery to the guests, Mr C. Burton voiced the general regret of all residents at losing such sterling residents as Mr and Mrs Hansen. It was their wish that Mr and Mrs Hansen would always find health and happiness in their new home. The residents of Kaiparoro, concluded Mr Burton, would always be pleased to welcome them on visits to the district. Musical honours were accorded the recipients, after which Mr Hansen suitably thanked the assemblage for the good wishes extended and the gift. Supper was dispensed by the ladies’ committee, which was greatly enjoyed. Dancing was kept up till a late hour, the proceedings terminating with the singing of Auld Lang Syne.
LABOUR PARTY EKETAHUNA BRANCH MEETS. The monthly meeting of the Eketahuna branch of the New Zealand Labour Party was held in the Odd Fellows Hall on Saturday night, the president, Mr G. A. Hansen, presiding over an excellent attendance of members. Mi’ E. Niederer was elected delegate to attend the special conference which is being held in Wellington today to discuss the Government's war mea-
sures. A member brought to the notice of the meeting that newspapers circulating in the town and district had published the names of recruits before they were passed by the Medical Board. He pointed out that this was a breach of the War Regulations and moved that the matter be referred to Mr J. Robertson, M.P. A lengthy discussion ensued on a motion moved by a member that the Labour Department investigate cases of children working before 7 a.m. The motion was defeated by a large majority. The concensus of opinion was that everyone, young and old alike, was needed to make a success of the Government’s war efforts. A competition for a cushion was finalised and resulted in Ngaire Goss being the winner. After the meeting the members spent an enjoyable hour at euchre, the prize winners being:—Ladies, Mrs P. Toohill, men. Mr.E. Toohill. Supper was served by the lady members.
COMING-OF-AGE PARTY NIREAHA GATHERING. One of the largest crowds ever seen in the Nireaha Hall was present on Friday night last to celebrate the com-ing-of-age of Messrs Len Hansen and Lloyd Goss, popular residents of the district. Dancing was the chief form of amusement, the music being provided by Drysdale’s Orchestra. An extra played by Mr E. Niederer was much appreciated. The M’s.C. were Messrs Colin Hansen and Arnold Goss.
Supper was served at 11.15 p.m., after which Mr W. Hooper, on behalf of those present, asked the guests of honour to accept' the large number of parcels and wished them many happy returns of the day. Mr F. Hansen presented a silver key to his son and Mr Chas. Goss handed to Mr L. Goss a cheque. Those present sang “For They Are Jolly Good Fellows” heartily, after which twentyone candles on two cakes were lit. The recipients returned thanks for the kind wishes and gifts received. They also thanked their respective parents for providing the party. The cake was then cut and the health of the guests were toasted. Dancing was kept up until the early hours of the morning.
