In his appeal to belligerents, the Pope said the ruins resulting from the present war were attaining gigantic proportions, but could not be compared with the collapse of mankind's spiritual and moral heritage. His Holiness asked what more terrifying sign of the destruction of spiritual values existed than the increasing disregard of rights by force which crushes and enchains ethical and judicial impulses.
