IN INTERESTS OF HEALTH

INNOVATION AT LA SCALA. An innovation in the interests of public health has recently been . introduced at. the “La Scala” in Masterton j by Miss G. Butcher for the sterilisation of glasses, crockery, cutlery, etc. One of the most serious clangers presented daily to the average individual is the possibility of contracting disease from drinking glasses used in public places. As a safeguard to health it is imperative that glasses be sterilised and kept clean and free from bacterial contamination. Westinghouse engineers, Drs. Rentschler and James, developed this new process of killing bacteria by invisible ultra-violet light. Experiments conducted in Wellington, consisted in contaminating the rims of drinking glasses obtained from Milk Bars, and determining the degree of bacterial contamination before and after exposure to ultra violet radiation from ’ Westinghouse “Sterilamps.” The results of these experiments showed that glasses which had not been sterilised carried heavy contamination, whereas the treated glasses showed no signs of organisms, proving that rays from the Westinghouse “Sterilamps” destroyed all bacteria on glasses instantly. The “La Scala” protects the health of patrons with the “Sterilamp” and they drink in perfect safety from Rentschlerized glasses and cups.*
