VALUE OF NARVIK

STRESSED BY BRITISH NEWSPAPERS BEARING ON LAND AND SEA OPERATIONS. IMPORTANT NAVAL BASE. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, May 30. British newspapers are noting that the capture of Narvik brings three important advantages to the Allies. First, Narvik will become a focal point of resistance by the Norwegians. The Allies have now a firm hold on Finmark, which is the section of Norway where King Haakon’s Government and army are established. The second gain will be the stoppage of iron ore supplies from Sweden to Germany, next winter. Finally, Narvik may prove immensely valuable in naval strategy. A naval base on the Norwegian coast, together with the British foothold in Iceland, will secure command of the North Atlantic and may frustrate any German designs for a sea attack on Britain through the Shetlands.
