SICK & WOUNDED

DONATIONS STILL COMING IN FREELY. STAFF & OTHER CONTRIBUTIONS Donations to the Sick, Wounded and Distressed Soldiers’ Fund appeal by the New Zealand Red Cross Society and the Order of St John are still coming in almost as freely as they were during the house-to-house campaign. The office in Page’s Buildings yesterday received a donation from Post Office employees. This is voluntarily given over and above what is deducted from their salaries and paid to the Central Fund. Further instalments were received from West School, this time the primers, as the result of work and odd jobs at home. This brought in £1 8s 4d. One well-wisher has donated a rub-ber-tyred gig in first class condition and the committee feels that there must be many farmers who could use such a vehicle owing to present petrol restrictions. Any particulars, price, etc., can be obtained at the office, ’phone 1963. The combined staffs of the Borough Council sent in a donation from their members amounting to £2l 4s 6d and this is much appreciated. The office staff of voluntary workers is very jubilant as there seems to be no possible chance of their being put off for at least a fortnight yet. Among the latest contributions is one of £lO from the Wairarapa Carriers’ Association. Today’s local total, excluding any returns from the raffles of the donkey or motor car was £2310 9s. RED CROSS. Cruickshank (Jean Street), Mrs P. R. Cook, Mauriceville West District women, Mrs Cody and staff, Mrs Toxward, Mrs Inder, Mrs Empson, Mrs Kummer, Anon, Townswomen’s Guild. Page’s, Miss Cody, Mrs D. M. Graham’and Mrs Morton.
