STATE THEATRE

4 AN EXCELLENT PROGRAMME. The large audience at the State Theatre last night had presented to them one of the finest programmes ever provided at that theatre. The chief feature, “Inspector Hornleigh on Holiday,” gave the audience plenty in the way of thrills and comedy, those present rocking in their seats at the humorous situations which developed. It is certainly the best of the Inspector Hornleigh pictures yet placed on the screen. The other attraction, “Too Busy to Work,” saw the Jones Family at their best and with the addition of new artists in the team, particularly Joan Davis, the finest Jones comedy ever placed before picture patrons is presented. Joan Davis gives a performance which stands out prominently and her antics caused roars of laughter. Gordon Harker is, of course, again the Inspector and he is accompanied by that bungling, comic aide, Sergeant Bingham, in the person of Alastair Sim. This new film, produced by Edward Black for 20th Century Productions, Ltd., involves the pail’ in an even more baffling and exciting mystery than the earlier picture. Hornleigh and Bingham are on a vacation at the seaside when Captain Fraser of the Royal Navy plunges off a cliff in his car and is burned to death. The body, charred beyond recognition, is identified by a tattoo mark on the hand. The verdict is suicide. But Inspector Hornleigh has ideas of his own. With his aide, dragged grudgingly away from vacation joys, Hornleigh does a nice piece of sleuthing and, after a series of amazing experiences, makes a discovery that will lift patrons clear out of their chairs with surprise. Harker gives a grand account of himself again as the Inspector and Sim contributes plenty of humour as his aide. Linden Travers is at the top of a fine supporting cast. _____________
