NATIONAL DEFENCE
UNITED STATES MEASURES. PRESIDENT APPROVES NEW TAXES. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. (Received This Day, 9.15 a.m.) WASHINGTON, May 28. President Roosevelt approved the Administration leaders’ plan to ask Congress for new national defence taxes yielding between six hundred and seven hundred million dollars annually for five years, also for a three thousand million dollars increase in the national debt limit. It is believed taxes will be sufficient to liquidate and service the special national defence obligations, which will be sold with maturities not exceeding five years. The debt limit at present is forty-five millions but the pre-defence budget required borrowing to this amount by June 30, 1941. The debt is at present 42,786,000,000 dollars.
