OIL SQUEEZE

DEVELOPMENTS IN CANADA

In the extreme north-west of Canada vast deposits of oil have been discovered, but owing to the cold it has frozen solid and capnot be pumped out by 'the usual methods. It has to be squeezed from the earth. The earth and rock is mined and crushed in huge grinders to a fine powder. Then it is mixed with water and naphtha, and the oil flows to the surface, ready for refining. This method is pot so expensive as it seems, for the percentage of oil in the earth is very high, and there is no danger from explosion or tire. Experts estimate that this deposit of frozen petroleum covers an area of 50.000 square miles in North Alberta, and holds 250 billion gallons of oil—about four times the total known oil reserve in the rest of the world.
