| MAIIUNGA CLUB ACTIVITIES i I PERFECT CONDITIONS ON , SATURDAY. IMPROVEMENT IN SCORES.
(By
"Cleek.")
The perfect conditions prevailing on Saturday were fully appreciated bymembers of the Mahunga Golf Club, many of whom returned much better scores than previously. A holding turf invited full shots to the pin, with the result that one putt often sufficed io hole the ball instead of the two or more usually required. Talking of putts, the ones that are missed probably cause more heartburning than any other stroke, yet putting is essentially one part of the game at which the “rabbit" can compete on even terms with the scratch player. It is not necessary to be a champion golfer to be a good putter. Practice is iiie only requirement and a worth while tip is never to putt a practice putt without holing the ball. For the longer approach putts, "hit the ball low" is a sound axiom and one that will show gratifying results. L. Roach, who fell from grace with an outsize in scores the previous week, came into his own with a vengeance »n Saturday by scoring a net 65 and finishing 4 up on bogey. His shots are played with a crispness and precision that deserve better results than sometimes come his way.
K- McFarlane played a splendid round of. 71 oil' the stick, thus equalling the par of the course and enabling him to finish 2 up. It is hard to fault this player. He executes all his shots with equal facility and undoubtedly has a bright future in golf. J. Norrie has again placed himself in the news by returning a net medal score of 66 —this despite a reduction of 4 strokes in his handicap the previous week. His game this season has shown steady improvement .a feature of his play being the determination and force evident in all his shots.
The club's popular captain. I. I. McGregor. pursues the even tenor of his way and usually plays within a stroke or two of his handicap. He is probably one of the most consistent performers in the club.
A player who maintains his keen interest in the club despite the fact that he was transferred from Masterton some years ago is M. R. Jago. He has retained his membership and whenever opportunity permits is to be seen on the links. Although short of a gallop on Saturday, he showed glimpses of good form 'which characterised his play when he was a regular member.
