Enjoyment Goes Well.
At Ellerslie yesterday Te Ronga led Enjoyment over a round, giving an excellent display of clean fencing, and taking every one alike. Enjoyment shaped very well in his first attempt over the hill, and is a clever jumper, who should make good as a steeplechaser with a little more experience.
Famous Jockey Retires. The English turf will be the poorer by the retirement from the riding list of Bernard Carslake. who is now 54 years of age. The health of this Aus-tralian-born jockey is affected by the wasting necessary now even to ride at 9st. On medical advice, he has decided to retire from the saddle after nearly 40 years of successful jockeyship. After .riding Ipswich first past the post at Alexandra Park on April 20, he collapsed in a finish of heads and he had.to have medical attention. That was his last race. “Brownie" has always been recognised as a powerful, cool, and a brilliant stylist. He had no superiors and but one or two equals among the jockeys of the last 20 years. He has ridden in many countries.
In 1928 he tried training. His plans for the future are indefinite. When war broke out in 1914. Carslake was riding in Austria-Hungary. He escaped from Austria disguised as the fireman of a railway engine, and reached Rumania. where he rode a number of winners in 1915. He then went on to Russia, where he became champion jockey, but had to flee when the revolution broke out in 1917 and returned to England. Tn 1919 he won the St. Leger on Lord Derby's Keysoe. Since then he has won most of the important races in England. Success of Mares. A feature of the Foxton. meeting was the success of mares, no 'fewer than five of the seven winners being of that sex. They were Valiant Lady, Winsome Lu. Stella Lux, Nelumbo and Titter.
Overdue Win. Winsome 'Lu scored an overdue win when she narrowly defeated the favourite, Classform, in the Foxton Cup. She has raced consistently all the season and has been placed on six occasions, but this was her first win from 18 starts.
Good Effort by Young Paddon. The going was very heavy at Te Rapa yesterday when the No. 2 grass was available for the rather restricted programme observed. The best effort over a sprint distance was that of Young Paddon, while Calorie did best over a round. The only schooling was that of Mio Lurne and Inness Lad, the pair being associated over live hurdles. Both gave a solid display, but Mio Lume was holding his companion at the finish and his exhibition will serve to increase his circle of admirers for jumping events at the Great Northern meeting. Padishah Pleases. At Hastings yesterday Padishah, at racing pace, would have pleased the most fastidious of judges by his steeplechasing of 10 obstacles. In fact it was as good a display as ever he has given. His Victorian weights are by no means prohibitive, but his trip across the Tasman has yet to be finalised and there is yet a possibility that he will contest the Wanganui Steeplechase on Monday next.
