Opaki Morses Should Do Well

PREPARATIONS FOR FUTURE MEETING?

(BY

“THE GRAFTER.”)

The win of Valiant Lady at Foxton on Saturday has drawn attention to the fact that Opaki is again building up a strong team of horses which should do well in the new racing season. Valiant Lady is a bay filly by Lackham —Valkey, and'is owned by that good sportsman, Mr I. D. Cameron, of Mauriceville. Valiant Lady scored a very creditable second 1 at the Manawatu meeting early in the month, putting in a strong challenge on the home turn. Other Opaki-trained horses which 'should do well in the near future are Counter (Croupier—Thurville), Gay Chou (Gay Lothario— Chouette), Te Ore (Lord Quex —Native Queen), Sky Limit (Sky Blue —Rangitere), Augment (Inflation —Eelspear) and White Rajah (Eastern Monarch—Princess Rosalie). *

Great Northern Steeplechase. During the past 10 years six winners of the Great Northern Steeplechase carried 9.0, one carried 9.2 (including 21b. overweight), one carried 9.4, and another 9.8. The other two winners were Callamart 10.11 and Billy Boy 10.7. Such a run of lightweights .suggests that it is not nowadays a topweights’ race. The race record is held by Billy Boy, who won in 7min. 44 secs.

Smoke Screen. The one-time brilliant Smoke Screen is engaged amongst the hurdlers at the Wanganui meeting. His wins include the king’s Plate, Great Northern Foal Stakes. Great Northern Guineas, and Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes.

Peony Rose Turned Out. The Robespierre mare Peony Rose has been turned out of training. During the season she scored three wins, four seconds, and a .third in 15 starts.
