FIGHT WITH THIEF
AIRMAN-WOUNDED WITH KNIFE. ATTEMPT TO STEAL PETROL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, May 26. Repeated thefts of petrol from cars at the No. 2 elementary flying training school at Bell Block took a sensational turn early on Friday morning, when a Maori, caught redhanded, fought with Aircraftsman J. K. Braddock and made his escape after gashing the airman i with a knife. Gashes on the back of the airman's hand will interfere with his training for some weeks. Periodical thefts of petrol have been made for some months from the tanks of cars parked well away from the guards. Having returned late from leave, Aircraftsman Braddock, shortly after midnight, heard noises, which he investigated. A Maori, who was carrying cans, dropped them and fled, but Aircraftsman Braddock caught him after a chase across paddocks. Blows were exchanged, and then the Maori drew a sheath knife. The airman grasped his wrist, but as they struggled the Maori managed to draw the blade back and forth across his adversary’s hand. Aircraftsman Braddock was forced to release his captive, who made off. Though a thorough search was made by the guards, who were called out, no trace of the intruder could be found.
