FIGHTING IN CHINA

JAPANESE KWANGTUNG OFFENSIVE

REACHING MAXIMUM INTENSITY. DETERMINED RESISTANCE BY CHINESE. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day. 1.35 p.m.) NEW YORK, May 26. The “New York Times” Hong Kong correspondent says the Japanese Kwangtung offensive, begun on May 22 is reaching its maximum in the Tsunfa sector, with a drive from Lisangkow, which the Japanese captured on May 23, but at present is meeting entrenched Chinese. Meanwhile 5,000 Japanese along the Canton —Hankow railway are thrusting from Sunkai toward Pakong, and 7000 in Tseingshing, northward of East River, are thrusting north for support of the Lisangkow offensive, while 5,000 in Sheklung, on the Canton-Kowloon railway are reported to be preparing to advance on Waichow, along the East River. It is believed that these attacks are intended to split up and confuse the defence, but General Yuhanmou, forewarned, has troops at all the threatened points. The Chinese claim already to have inflicted 3,000 Japanese casualties.
