The game between Hastwells and Dalefield provided play similar to that of the previous week’s contest, the Hastwells defence again proving hard to penetrate. The pace was on all the way with Dalefield attacking strongly for the first ten minutes, but hard hitting spoiled chances of scoring. Very even play followed in which Ruakere went very close to scoring from a penalty corner. After 30 minutes play a Hastwells passing forward movement. ended in Worthington, opening the score with a good shot. Dalefield conceded another .penalty corner but the interval was called before it was completed. Hastwells 1, Dalefield nil. Early in the second spell two more penalty corners were awarded against Dalefield but Hastwells were unable to add to their score. After ten minutes play Worthington again found the net. Hastwells 2, Dalefield nil. Shortly after Ruakere, with one of his characteristic solo runs added another goal for Hastwells. With about 10 minutes to go Dalefield set up a hot attack and a good combined forward passing movement gave Hooper his chance to open his team’s score. Hastwells 3, Dalefield 1. Dalefield continued to press and Hastwells were forced to concede two penalty corners in quick succession but their defence held. With only a few minutes to go the Hastwell forwards broke through from their 25. and J. Dick scored, leaving HastW.elljj the winners by 4 goals to 1. Plsy generally was of an exciting nature. Messrs Clements and Moor were the umpires.
CARTERTON v. WESLEY. HOME TEAM’S IMPROVED FORM. The Carterton-Wesley match proved very exciting at times. Wesley showed improved form and may be troublesome as the season progresses. No doubt the reason to a certain extent is due to the inclusion in their team of the ex-Canterbury representative, Hurley, who is no mean exponent of the game. This game was fairly evenly contested throughout and was played at a good pace. Wesley opened the score shortly after the commencement of play and held their advantage for some time. Carterton, however, with continued pressure added three goals, making the half-time score: Carterton 3, Wesley 1. On the resumption of play Wesley set .the pace and added two goals in quick succession. The spectators at this stage were on their toes with excitement but the pace was beginning to tell on Wesley and Carterton added two further goals before time was called. Goals were scored for Carterton by Jackson (2), Worsfold, A. Fisher and S. Fisher, and for Wesley Nicol (2) and A. Harrington. Messrs J. Fisher and E. Tooby controlled the game.
