BASKETBALL
WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION KEEN GAMES ON SATURDAY. IMPROVED PLAY. IN EVIDENCE. The Wairarapa Basketball Association's matches were continued on Saturday and the standard of play generally showed an improvement. On the whole very much closer struggles than usual resulted. RESULTS AT A GLANCE. A Grade. lona 16, Collegians 12. College 30, lona B 3. B Grade. Greytown Hospital 25. Collegians 5. Belvedere 13, College B Iff Masterton Hospital won by default from Technical Old Girls.
The oustanding match of the day was that between lona and Collegians which was a very fast game. P. Jones showed glimpses of her old form in positional play and backed up her third well. C. Talbot, a new A Grade player, shows outstanding' accuracy in goal throwing and was a decided asset to her team. Pat Hanley and M. Eastwood gave a good display of centre work. lona had slightly the advantage in this part of the field. The defenders worked well, especially the back defender of lona but P. Greenlees plays a better game in the centre than at.defence. For Collegians Joan Gemmell was the outstanding goal thrower. This player is quick and clever. M. McLaren did some good anticipation play. Her team mate' B. Renner has a good style but sometimes does not get rid of the ball quickly enough. With a little more understanding these two centre players, together with B. Linton, could provide a good combination. L. Renner, Collegian’s defence, is invaluable in her department She is a steady player and was always there at the right moment. College gave a display of good basketball against lona B. lona B played a plucky game against a better team. The experience gained this year will be invaluable to them. They are worthy of being - in this grade. If after the first round the promoted teams find A grade too difficult the teams can apply for a regrading. The College B —Belvedere match was very exciting and spectators enjoyed the game. Belvedere is a team that is composed of most enthusiastic players. If this team adopted shorter passes their play would be quicker and their positional play would improve. The College B team was unfortunate that L. Cretney had to leave 4he field. Their thirds had to be rearranged and combination was spoilt. They would do better if they got rid of the ball more quickly. They certainly play good basketball but must be a little more adventuresome.
In the Greytown Hospital—Collegians match the former played well. This team should be high up in the B Grade. Their captain plays a good centre game and is certainly the pivot of the team. Collegians B are not giving of their best yet. If they took their game a little more seriously the team would get results. Isabel Stevenson is one of the best in this team and her team mates would do well if they followed her example.. Olwyn Richards gives glimpses of good play. < In all games too much personal contact was in evidence and in future referees are going to be more strict for breaches of the game in this connection. More referees are required and each team is responsible for at least two referees. Names should be handed into the secretary by June 8. All teams are to register the names of members and emergencies. Any referee wishing to sit for the New Zealand Basketball Referees’ examination must hand in her entry to the secretary by June 1 together- with the entry fee of Is.
No basketball is to be held on June 1, but the competition will be resumed on June 8.
