Severe earthquakes damaged many houses, also the Cathedral and injured twenty persons. Communications, both to the south and the north, have been cut off. The earthquake was the most violent for fifty years, but there has been no repetition of the shock. A schoolhouse at Bellavista collapsed, killing at least ten, mostly children. The wall of a building in Lima collapsed, partly crushing the roof of a tram filled with passengers, injuring many.
