FEATHERSTON COUNTY
NEW VALUATION ROLL
SERIOUS,POSITION CREATED.
REPRESENTATIONS TO MINISTER
("Times-Age” Special.) At a special meeting of the Featherston County Council on Wednesday, the Martinborough Borough Council wrote stating that the council would be glad to receive the county council's tentative proposals regarding the water headworks, after which the Mayor and some of the councillors would like lb inspect the headworks in conjunction with the chairman of the county council.
Cr R. Smith reported on the conditions at the headworks, and it was resolved to advise the borough council that it was the opinion of the county council that it was not advisable tc undertake major works at the headworks in the winter time. Mr A. E. E. Johnson wrote asking for permission to use the Western Lake road as far down as Mr Ashdown's for carting wood, as the use of this road (which had been closed for heavy traffic) was necessary to his living. A similar request was received from Mi C. H. Lethaby.
It. was decided that permission could be obtained from the overseer whenever he considered conditions were such that damage to the road would not be caused.
The South Wairarapa branch of the N.Z. Crippled Children Society wrote enclosing a copy of the annual report for the year ended March 31, 1940. and asking if the council could make a grant for the current year. The grants made by various local bodies last year were of material help in providing the necessary funds for educational, medical and welfare services for the crippled children. The council decided that it could no' make grants of this nature during the current year. The Valuation Department forwarded. a copy of the revised rolls for the Featherston county and requesting that the rolls be open for public inspection during business hours from May 24 tc June 14 inclusive.
The position created by the new valuation roll being dated as at April 1 last was very fully discussed by the council. It renders void the rate decided upon at the meeting of the Council on May 10 to produce the revenue required for the estimates drawn up and approved. Temporary finance will have to be obtained by overdraft, which will entail increased interest charges. It was decided that the chairman, engineer and solicitor wait on the Minister of Internal Affairs and point out the serious conditions created by the new roll being dated back to April 1 and to see if some alteration could be made.
