BRITISH FORCES
SITUATION VERY GRAVE THREAT TO UOMMUNIUA I lONS. GERMAN MECHANISED UNITS BEHIND LINES. (Received This Day. 9 a.m.) LONDON, May 23. It is authoritatively learned in London that the situation remains very grave. There is no disguising that British communications are endangered. The channel ports are still usable. They have not been “bombed to blazes.” German armoured forces are behind our lines, cutting telephone communications and destroying nodal points. The presence of refugees is making retaliation very difficult.
BOMBERS BUSY ATTACKS ON ENEMY TROOPS AND SUPPLY LINES. (Received This Day, 9 a.m.) LONDON, May 23. The Air Ministry reports that R.A.F. bombers continued to harass enemy columns in northern France yesterday and heavily bombed enemy communications in the Sedan area and in south Belgium. Last night they further attacked railways in Germany carrying military traffic to battlefields. Steps have been taken to guard vital points against motorised units which penetrated the gap between Arras and Bapaume. There has been much air activity over north-eastern France, anti-aircraft and small arms fire shooting down German bombers and reconnaissance planes.
